The Orban 424A earned its spurs in the broadcasting industry before it was discovered by recording studios. The 424A is a dual channel (stereo) compressor, limiter, and de-esser all rolled into one. As such, the 424A is Swiss Army knife sort of dynamic processor. Remarkably, it suffers no discernible side-effects that limit its range or application.
The model gained a reputation for its smooth and crystalline processing of vocals. Though controlled by Orban’s proprietary processors, attack and release times can be manually adjusted over a wide range by front panel controls.
Inputs and outputs are electronically balanced. The AGC (automatic gain control) uses circuitry derived from Orban’s renowned OPTIMOD-FM Model 8100A broadcast processor – the gold standard of the industry. The 424A is particularly suited to extract the maximum loudness from tracks whilst delicately maintaining the overall equilibrium of individual instruments.
The unit for sale has its fascia and lettering intact and is in near-mint condition. On the rear, the terminal is supplemented by XLR in- and output sockets. The meter light bulbs have been replaced. The unit has been thoroughly tested and meets or exceeds all manufacturers specs.
